Costa Rica travel with Children —
Serendipity Style!
ChiChi is 4, and already a fearless white water veteran. ChiChi plays with the river with the same ease as the Indigenous kids — an enviable confidence for a young child.
Serendipity Costa Rica loves traveling and exploring with children!
Any parent knows that the best part of life is exposing your children to new and interesting experiences. But traveling with one or more young children can be so much work that you need a vacation when you get home. It starts with the planning, when you have to determine whether the hotels are child friendly and child safe, and restrict your activities to those you can do with a child in tow, or determine how you can find a sitter for your child so you can still do the things that your children can't.

Traveling with your children can and should be an enriching experience. There are many activities that young children can do or are naturally inclined to do that make for a fun and interesting trip for everyone, but you have to find the right company: one that recognizes children's natural abilities and caters to their enthusiasm. Most travel companies are oriented towards entertaining adults, but Serendipity prides itself on developing trips that will be enjoyed by everyone on the trip, regardless of their age, because we know that the trip will be more memorable if everyone on the trip shares new experiences.
Serendipity specializes in family vacations
Mattias, on his third birthday, insisted he could do it alone. Dad agreed. Horses are still a primary form of transportation in Costa Rica. Therefore, it is quite common for mothers to ride with small children and for children to learn to ride when they are quite young.
Travel in Costa Rica with children requires special understanding both of Costa Rica and of children. Before we design a trip for you and your family, we will spend a lot of time talking with you to qualify your expectations and understand what you and your children want to experience while in Costa Rica. Nature — of course, but also the freedom to play as children should play, to meet kids from Costa Rica who can share their country with your kids, to learn a little Spanish, to broaden their understanding of the world just by enjoying themselves and their surroundings.
Costa Rica Travel with Children - family travel to experience adventure, culture, nature
We stopped with Minor, who trains Serendipity guides in snake recognition and treatment. Garfield, a pet Boa, loves the attention from newfound friends.
We have ways to take even young children on great adventures — horseback, rafting, climbing trees and rappelling. And we know where to find the animals that will enchant them. We know which guides work best with kids, and what equipment makes their entry into real adventure both secure and not frightening.
We know which hotels are kid-friendly, and which will drive parents, or kids, crazy. We know about persnickety eaters, and we have answers for the thousands of extra questions they will ask. Our guides know how to treat earaches, sunburns, and just too much activity to stay awake for dinner.
Traveling with very young children

While the older kids are off riding, the youngest get to take care of the horses — food and water, and washing them down with hoses.
Serendipity Costa Rica has a long history of traveling with children of all ages. We have au pairs who can travel with you, if that makes more sense for very young children. After your younger kids develop trust in their borrowed nanny, parents and older siblings can go gung-ho! on the adventures.
Traveling with children requires some courage — and it helps to ask someone who has been there before you
We LOVE to share Costa Rica with children. Kids really take to the people here, and the animals, and the adventures, too, like a duck takes to water. We encourage you to speak with some Serendipity adventurers from recent trips. We are happy to give you referrals for kids similar to your own, so give us a call.
Gregor and Thibu were the first to spot the monkeys from the balloon.
Check our sample itineraries for Costa Rica family travel, ideal for teenagers, and our Costa Rica eco travel , a good starting point for multi-generation family trips with younger children. Change the Class IV whitewater (the Pacuare River) to a lighter-duty river and we can take children as young as about 6 (but we need to speak with you in detail about your children, to know what they will enjoy. Many younger children enjoy the white water, while some could end up afraid of water all their lives — it is important to avoid creating fears.)
