Things to See in San Gerardo de Dota

When you explore San Gerardo de Dota, keep an eye out for the following remarkable sights:

  • Resplendent Quetzal: The star of the show, this striking bird is a symbol of the region’s beauty. Even so, there are still many other amazing bird species to watch for here.
  • Cloud Forests: The lush cloud forests are home to a variety of unique flora and fauna, providing an enchanting backdrop to your adventures. While rare, it is possible to even see monkeys in the forest. The last time we went, a troop of monkeys passed overhead, but one little guy followed us on the trail to make sure we weren’t causing any trouble.
  • Waterfalls: Every set of hiking trails will have a waterfall and you often have the chance to experience them with no one else around. Take a moment to stop and listen to the sounds of the water and the forest. The water is usually freezing cold, but that doesn’t mean you can’t sit along the edges and dip your toes in.
  • Savegre River: Crystal-clear waters meandering through pristine landscapes make the Savegre River a must-see. There are many places to stop and appreciate the beauty of the Savegre as it tumbles over boulders. They also make memorable photo ops!
  • Mushroom Species: Keep an eye out for various mushroom species during a foraging expedition. They come in an array of colors and shapes and are more common in the months following September when you can expect the ground to be wetter. We always award a prize to the person who finds the most interesting or unusual mushroom.
  • Breathtaking Vistas: Whether you’re hiking or simply exploring, the panoramic views of the Talamanca Mountains will take your breath away. From the Siwa lookout at Savegre Lodge, you have a great view of the landscape. You can see the natural beauty but also orchards full of apple trees and avocados. Both are valuable agricultural products of the region.
